So long New York!

Day's start:

Today I've finished up packing up and moving out.

Day's end:
Goal accomplished!
1. Move out of New York City by the end of June

With much help from Nathan Becker, everything was packed up, sold off, or left on the curb, the apartment was cleared and cleaned. After NINE YEARS in NYC, I am FREE and on the road to Rehoboth Beach, DE.

MOVING OUT

It seems like I've been sorting and sifting for weeks. But besides figuring out what I'm going to do with all my crap, closing accounts and proper wrapping up must also happen. When moving, don't forget to:

-Cancel utilities like:
ConEd 1-800-75-CONED
National Grid 1-718-643-4050
Verizon 1-800-verizon
Time Warner Cable 1-800-892-2253

-Change your address with USPS

-Need more boxes? Hit up your nearest liquor store. If you're moving books, many small boxes are better than large ones.

-Any mattresses placed in the street for disposal (in NYC) must be bagged

-Take a few minutes every now and again to peacefully gather your thoughts and relish in the great changes that can come from moving!

Book Thug Nation

In Williamsburg! I made $45 selling old books there. You might, too!
Carries an awesome selection of used books in a peaceful atmosphere, and they kindly hosted my friend Ben's book release party for his novel Harvits as to War.

Philly and back again

Today is a travel day, running around stashing My Preciouses:
To my friends Hathaway and Pete in Philadelphia to store the distillation of my library.
To friends Mark and Bill in Plainfield, NJ to deposit my snowboard until the winter.

A day of long distance errands could be annoying if not for a (in)capable copilot and someone to come home to.

How many clothes does one man need?

I know I'm going to fuck this one up. I have to somehow reduce my clothes to an amount that I can travel with. I suggest to myself:
15 t-shirts
10 button downs
2 flannels
5 polo shirts
3 short sleeve button downs
2 khakis
2 jeans
2 corduroys

15 underwears
15 pairs of socks

5 workout shorts
5 workout shorts
5 tanks
3 middle layers
2 tights
2 running pants

I'll see how this goes.

Can't take it with me

To many readers, our personal libraries not only represent a collection of favorite books, but also a collection of friends and memories. Giving up books can be difficult. Still, I need to pare down my collection before I skip town.
My friend Hathaway has promised to adopt the library while i'm away, but I can't burden her with every book that has lodged in my shelves over the last few years. Three criteria will let me save a book:
1. Do I love it?
2. Will I want to refer to it again?
3. Do I have other books by that author?

Each book to keep gets a stamp in the back:
The BookTote (tm) will hold the "small" collection of books I want to read while I am on the road:

The Bonfire of the Vanities by Tom Wolfe
A Princess of Mars by Edgar Rice Burroughs
Walden by Henry David Thoreau
From Max Weber: Essays in Sociology
Native American Testimony Ed. Peter Nabokov
Lady Chatterley's Lover by D.H. Lawrence
Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World by Haruki Murakami
The PowerBook by Jeanette Winterson
Fathers and Sons by Ivan Turgenev
The Bostonians by Henry James
Sixty Stories by Donald Barthelme
A Moveable Feast by Ernest Hemingway
Angels in America by Tony Kushner
The Waterfront Journals by David Wojnarowicz
The Razor's Edge by W. Somerset Maugham
Beyond Good and Evil by Friedrich Nietzsche
Thus Spake Zarathusra by Friedrich Nietzsche
Kinship with All Life by J. Allen Boone
Letters from Hawaii by Mark Twain
Holy Bible
The Kingdom of Heaven Within
Billions & Billions by Carl Sagan
The Life and Death of Planet Earth by Peter Ward & Donald Brownlee
The Line of Beauty by Alan Hollinghurst
Freedom by Jonathan Franzen

Okay, so that's a lot of books. Might take me a couple weeks to get through ;) Stay tuned.

Save 5pointz!

5pointz is NYC's most incredible site for graffiti art, organized and curated by graffiti artists. There is currently a push to make 5Pointz a NYC Landmark in order to stave off its destruction to make room for MORE CONDOS in Long Island City Queens.

Go check it out before they smash it down, and sign the petition to make it a landmark!
